Holy heck! We met Jon Scieszka!

Erin S. and I drove up to JMU this afternoon to see Jon Scieszka, award-winning author and recently crowned National Ambassador of Young People’s Literature. Jon is the creator of the now-classic Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs! as well as the Time Warp Trio series and loads, loads more. He’s a great writer. We’re big fans.

We were getting ready to walk into the auditorium when Erin S. shoved me in the kidney and whispered, “that’s him!” Sure enough, Jon Scieszka himself was standing about 3 feet away from us … and he was saying something to his companion about needing more books to take on stage with him. Well, we just happened to be carrying a copy of Cowboy & Octopus, so we volunteered to let him borrow it. He whisked it away with a promise to return it after his presentation. Awesome! Our book is now famous. Well, he didn’t actually use it in the presentation … but still.

The presentation was fantastic — very funny, with loads of silly anecdotes (some of them gross. Yes, gross. It’s true!) Jon also read bits from some of his books, including his new and most super-secret book that will be published later this year.

After the talk, Erin S. and I stood in line for about 45 minutes to get our books signed … while we waited, we entertained a few kids with bubbles and cookies. Hey, it’s what we do. When we got to the front, Jon whisked out our copy of Cowboy & Octopus, unscathed, from under his chair, signed it (along with a few more copies for the store), and let me snap this completely unstaged photo of him chatting to Erin S:

So, we now have two signed copies of Cowboy & Octopus and two signed copies of Smash! Crash! here at the store — come and get ’em because I don’t think they’ll last long.
