Downtown Staunton News Roundup, May 19 2011

Hey, look at me! I’m back with another Downtown Staunton news roundup.

The City is making plans to install new kiosks and gate technology at the Augusta Street lot and New Street parking garage. This will enable them to charge for parking after 5PM.What do you think? Good idea?

Ox-Eye Vineyards has a new wine tasting room downtown. It’s right below the train station, at the corner of Middlebrook and Lewis (across from Sunspots). The vineyards themselves are located near Swoope.

Speaking of Sunspots, they’ve recently done a big re-do of their sales floor and it looks amaaaazing. They posted lots of pictures here.

Our good friends at Byers Street Housewares are closing their doors after 14 years. They’ll be open several days this week with huge bargains on their remaining inventory. Check out their Facebook page for details.

I’ve heard rumors that Newtown Baking is now open Friday and Saturday evenings from 6-8, with live music in the beer garden. Sounds good to me! I haven’t checked on the hours in person, so you would want to give them a call to make sure. I also noticed that Newtown was mentioned in a post by the Friendly City Food Co-Op in Harrisonburg … does that mean their delicious wares will be available to purchase in Rocktown when the grocery opens? Exciting for our neighbors to the north!

The Staunton Downtown Development Center is working on obtaining a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s “This Place Matters” contest. You’ll want to take a look at Peter Aaslestad‘s photos of the R. R. Smith Center on the SDDA Facebook page.

Staunton Jams is this Saturday! And the weather forecast is looking good.

On the Save the Bridge front, there are two ginormous new “Save the Bridge” banners on the New Street parking garage, the SDDA is still looking for entries in their Save the Bridge video contest, and you can now buy Save the Bridge t-shirts and bumper stickers. It’s Bridge mania!

Sarah from the Baja reports that they have restocked on Banana Bread beer. I don’t even know what that is, but apparently there are a lot of folks who’ve been waiting for it. Rejoice!

And finally, in Split Banana news, they are now serving Guinness ice cream. I haven’t tried it yet, but everyone is flipping out over it.
